SALARY: $13,558.48 ($17.38/hourly)

SUMMARY: This is responsible clerical work involving assisting patrons with library services. Major job functions include circulation, patron assistance, shelving, collection of fines and maintaining orderly appearance of library. The employee works under immediate supervision of an associate and work is evaluated through observation and feedback.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Assisting patrons with checking books in and out; registering patrons for library cards; and receiving and recording overdue fines
  • Assisting patrons in finding books and using library services and equipment
  • Answering directional, informational questions for patrons by telephone and in person; explaining library policies and procedures
  • Receiving, sorting, and processing books to be sent to bindery
  • Performing duties associated with maintenance; evaluation and management of audio visual materials to include audio and video tapes, compact discs, and related materials
  • Maintaining periodical collection
  • Opening and closing the library; logging on computers and terminals; locking money in safe; securing building
  • Ensuring that the library is maintained in an orderly manner; ensuring that books, videos and other materials are picked up from tables and placed in appropriate locations, that circulation area is kept clear of returned items; displaying areas properly arranged; and books, furniture, and equipment straightened as needed
  • Collecting books, newspapers, and other materials from book depositories
  • Maintaining reserved book listings and notifying patrons of arrival and availability of reserved books
  • Proofreading library cards as they are processed for typographical or other errors
  • May assist in planning and presenting story times and other programs; promoting summer reading programs
  • Assisting in collecting a variety of statistics on library circulation and services
  • May conduct tours of the library for patrons or other community groups
  • All responsibilities may not be performed by all incumbents
  • Performing other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

MINIMUM EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or GED, supplemented by college-level or vocational course work in a related field
  • One year professional related work experience; customer service preferred
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • Possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license (Class C) and a satisfactory motor vehicle record (MVR) if assigned job duties requiring the use of a vehicle

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of library operations, policies, procedures, terminology, and materials
  • Knowledge of modern office practices, methods, and equipment
  • Knowledge of basic business mathematics: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
  • Knowledge of specialized software, materials, terminology, and forms essential to the assignment
  • Skill in effective inter-personal and public relations and customer service; excellent oral and written communication skills to satisfactorily resolve conflicts and issues, and to explain established policies and procedures to the general public
  • Skill in creating, maintaining, and organizing accurate, detailed, and complete records in accordance with standard record-keeping practices
  • Skill in performing tasks which require attention to detail, and completing assigned jobs efficiently and correctly
  • Skill in planning, prioritizing, and organizing work; ability to handle multiple work assignments efficiently, accurately, and professionally
  • Skill in the use of personal computers, MS Office Suite, databases, spreadsheets, and word processing; typing and entering data into a computer system accurately and efficiently
  • Ability to apply common sense to understand, follow, and complete verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to communicate and interact clearly and effectively with all those contacted in the course of work in a professional and courteous manner, both orally and in writing, establishing and maintaining effective, professional, and cordial working relationships
  • Ability to demonstrate compassion and respect in client interactions, with disabled individuals and others needing special assistance; ability to deal effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to work in a team setting
